Louis Chagnon

BIOGRAPHY

Louis Chagnon is a french artist. He was born in Paris on September 23rd, 1955. He studied history at La Sorbonne University (PARIS). He started his first paintings in the seventies, but gave up painting for history. He became a history teacher in 1987. He went back to painting in 1990. He used oil painting and he put his works up in galleries for the first time in 1994. Trying to go around the traditionnal type of art, he imagined to use confetti to create a new esthetic. He used those as pochoir.

In 1994, he combined oil painting to sticking. He cut oil-painted canvas and pasted it on oil-painted wood. With this method, he has created a great number of works including illustrations of La Fontaine Fables and the Genesis.

Following his research, Louis Chagnon used new products such a metallic paint for cars. This lead to his series called "Metallic nudes".
In 1995, he gave up teaching so as to be completely devoted to his art.
Louis Chagnon is convinced that the main objective of the artist is to offer continuously new perspectives to the public. The aim is to try and answer the painter's basic questions : what to paint? why paint? how to paint?
He studies Mondrian, Malevitch, Arp, Delaunay, Domela, Freundlich, Magnelli, Taeuber, and Soulages.

In 1996, he thought of using the corrugated paperboard for his art. He abandoned figurative art and worked on the role of light unveiled by the white colour covering the paperboard. The painting structure is sometimes reinforced by the black colour added as a last touch.

In 1997, he transcends the national market to join international artists and has an exhibition at the Walton Contemporary Art Gallery, in London (Great-Britain), then in 1998 at the gallery Hors Limite, in Tournai (Belgium).
Collage has become the cornerstone of his searches: paper collages, corrugated paper, upon oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolours or printed in serigraphy.
